Refugees graduate from orientation course

Friday 27 January 2017

It’s graduation time for several refugee groups taking the Bendigo Community Health Services orientation course run by our Humanitarian Settlement Services team.

The orientation course involves several weeks of information and education on things such as using public transport, Australian laws, culture, banking system, currency, rental housing, water safety, health services and the role of the police.

For many new people, arriving in Australia can be a challenging even overwhelming experience. So much is foreign; the language, the people, the smells, the food and landscape are different. This period of orientation is a small part of lifelong learning in their settlement journey.

BCHS also runs a Karen Youth Focus group each Friday.

Bendigo falls program helps June recover from untimely tumble

Friday 13 January 2017

When June Prior took a tumble her next step was to quickly find something to improve her fitness and balance.

June found her way to the Bendigo Community Health Services Falls and Balance Exercise Program under the guidance of Ashleigh Oliver.

“I am 83 years of age and have a few health problems and felt anything that would help my balance would be a real asset. Firstly, I learnt that just because I had health problems I could still do part of every exercise and this gave me huge encouragement to try everything,” June said.

Sadly, June isn’t alone when it comes to taking a tumble with statistics showing one in three adults aged 65 years and older will fall one or more times a year.

Our Falls and Balance Exercise Program offers a 30-minute personal assessment and then supervised 45-minute groups exercise sessions which cater for your individual needs.

The program uses a range of exercises and stretching techniques to improve your balance, joint mobility, muscle strength, independence, confidence, general health and wellbeing, knowledge of fall risk factors and possible injuries.

“My general health increased remarkably, I was much happier in myself and had a great sense of achievement and friendship,” June said.

“Following the exercise plan which was given to us, I can now walk further every day.''

Share The Dignity has bags of kindness and generosity

Thursday 12 January 2017

Share The Dignity’s #itsinthebag Christmas campaign has helped more than 250 Bendigo Community Health Services consumers feel the festive spirit.

Share The Dignity was established by Queensland personal trainer Rochelle Courtenay and friend Heather Ranger in 2015 after they were ‘ashamed’ into action by an article on the Mamamia website about homeless women and domestic violence survivors in shelters going without sanitary items.

The program uses volunteers in Bendigo and across Australia to connect with not-for-profit organisations such as Bendigo Community Health Services to ensure those in need are looked after.

Share The Dignity used a #itsinthebag Christmas campaign to call on Australians to fill a handbag they no longer used with items to make a woman feel special and include a handwritten note to show her that someone cares and she matters.

We distributed donated handbags through the child and family services team, alcohol and other drugs treatment program, settlement services (refugee families) and headspace Bendigo.

Our acting CEO Liz March summed up the feeling of the organisation and the consumers who received a handbag thanks to the generosity and kindness of Share The Dignity.

Wednesday 4 January 2017

This heartwarming and inspiring letter of thanks to one of our staff deserves sharing.

It shows that even in the toughest times there are people who care that can make a difference.

Thank you to this wonderful mum for sharing these feelings, reminding our Early Childhood Intervention Services team and all our staff that what they do each day does change lives and showing those in the community doing it tough that reaching out can make a big difference.

Dear Carmel.

I just wanted to express to you my feelings.

Wonderful festive support for BCHS and our consumers

Friday 23 December 2016

Several organisations have found plenty of Christmas spirit to help Bendigo Community Health Services bring festive cheer to some of the people we care for.

The Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Crooked Kitchen and Bronte Book Club have all delivered gifts for distribution.

Staff from the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank main branch in Charring Cross have supported children from new refugees families in Bendigo with a giving program delivering a host of Christmas gifts.

Settlement Services staff have spent the day delivering the gifts to families across Bendigo.

"Well the staff from Bendigo and Adelaide Bank here in Bendigo have shown some Christmas spirit again for children of newly arrived refugee families," Settlment Services manager Martine Street said.

"Many of the gifts are those that we played with as children! The old totem tennis tournaments that often ended as a gladiatorial contest with our dad and brothers. The fabulous bug catcher and coloured chalk that gave many hours absorbed in drawing and watching butterflies.

"Thank you to the staff for bringing some of your values to our newest residents, the gift of giving. You did this last year and the settlement team are so touched that Gayle and the other staff took time out of their busy schedule to consider the children.

"We are the lucky ones who get to see their smiles as we drive around today to deliver your gifts.

"So from the family at BCHS to the staff and families at the bank we hope you and your family have a safe Festive Season full of love and laughter."

Elmore Walking Group celebrates 10th birthday

The Elmore Walking Group celebrated its 10th birthday today with a four-kilometre stroll and morning tea.

The Bendigo Community Health Services supported group walked four-kilometres through the town and along the picturesque Campaspe River to mark the occasion.

Walking group founder and now Bendigo-based BCHS strength training facilitator Aileen O’Brien returned to lead the celebration walk.

BCHS CEO Kim Sykes congratulated the group before walkers Lesley Edmondston and Sam Dalton who have been with the group since the start cut a special 10th birthday cake.

Lesley said the social aspect of the group was what kept bringing people back each Tuesday and Thursday.

“It’s been wonderful for Elmore and wonderful for us to be part of it,” Lesley said.

“We’re all happy to do what anyone else is doing … we’re not in a continuous race. You walk to your pace. Some people go on, some people catch up and we get our exercise.

“We get our mouth exercise as well as our bodily exercise,” Lesley laughed.

Lesley said Healthy Lifestyles program facilitator Sandra Holmberg was ‘amazing’ in co-ordinating both the walking group and strength training.

“There’s so many different personalities and she never changes… she’s always happy, always upbeat. You can talk to her with a problem if you’re finding an exercise too hard and she doesn’t make you feel like a dill because you can’t do it. She’s very down to earth.”

Sandra agreed the social aspect was the secret to the group’s success.

“Initially, people come for the exercise because they have been told to or they feel they need to … they continue to come because it’s so social and it’s good fun,” Sandra said.

“They walk with different people every time and they have the opportunity to meet locals.

“I actually get quite a few new people to town and it’s a way of them meeting new people in town. The group that we have got is so good… we have a lady who used to run the antique shop so she knows things to do and places to go so she gives them advice. Other people are into their craft so they’ll talk about craft or cooking, so there’s never anyone bored with the walk because there’s always someone different to talk to and they talk about different things.”

Sandra said the strength training program at Elmore was convenient for residents.

“We have people recovering from hip replacements or knee replacements. They come rather than go to Bendigo to do their physio exercises… they’ll get the physio to send me the exercises which is more convenient for them rather than travelling.

“If they did the exercises in Bendigo and finished their program in Bendigo it would stop whereas here they do their program for their rehabilitation but they continue because it is an enjoyable place to be.”

Another popular aspect of the walking group is the famous yearly ‘bus trip’.

“We have the bus here that we take but we often have to take two vehicles because everyone wants to come,” Sandra said.

Congratulations to all involved in the Elmore Walking Group – happy birthday!

Bendigo Community Health Services signs on as major sponsor for family violence fundraising event featuring Rosie Batty

Friday 23 December 2016

Bendigo Community Health Services was proud to sponsor a special fundraiser for survivors of family violence.

The May 17 event was organised by the Rotary Club of Bendigo and featured special guest speaker Rosie Batty, a panel discussion on topic of family violence and Academy Award-nominated film As It Is In Heaven.

Proceeds from the event in Ulumbarra Theatre supported the Annie North women’s refuge in Bendigo.

Bendigo Community Health Services CEO Kim Sykes said the organisation was pleased to support the event as a gold sponsor.

“This event featuring As It Is in Heaven and Rosie Batty as guest speaker will place significant attention on family violence,” Ms Sykes said.

“As a community health organisation our staff see first-hand how family violence can impact through generations and it’s our belief that raising awareness, increasing community education and reminding people that everyone has a responsibility to act are vital elements to changing this terrible culture.

“We also recognise the great work being done by Annie North and see the new purpose-built refuge when complete as a vital community asset that should enjoy everyone’s support.”

Annie North refuge CEO Julie Oberin thanked everyone involved in the event.

“These families need the support of our community to help them start anew, to help them recover from the abuse with dignity. Our staff work with and support these survivors, women and children just like those in your families, to ensure they feel safe and have access to the resources they need to begin to heal and achieve the potential they have in front of them,” she said.

“The findings of the Victorian Royal Commission into family violence released this week showed how much the issue of family violence affected our communities and that we all needed to take responsibility to help challenge and change the attitudes and beliefs which underpinned it.”

Rotary Club of Bendigo event convenor Rosalie Rogers said the club was keen to make a difference with family violence.

“Club members were very aware of recent information and publicity about the prevalence and impact of family violence coming to light and felt that an event such as this could raise awareness as well as raise some much needed funds to support the survivors of family violence to purchase much needed items as they transition from their emergency accommodation to more permanent accommodation,” she said.

Ms Rogers thanked Bendigo Community Health Services for signing on as a gold sponsor and Haven Home Safe, Anglicare Victoria, Bendigo Health and Star Cinema who were also supporting the event.

The City of Greater Bendigo supported the night through a Community Grant.

Bendigo Foodshare enjoys Bendigo Community Health Services staff support

Friday 23 December 2016

UPDATE: Bendigo Community Health Services staff have donated another 25,000 meals to Bendigo Foodshare just in time for the Million Meals in March campaign.

The BCHS staff workplace giving program generated $1621 for Bendigo Foodshare with each $1 equating to 16 meals.

EARLIER: A Bendigo Community Health Services workplace giving program has donated more than 40,000 meals to Bendigo Foodshare.

BCHS CEO Kim Sykes said staff were keen to support Bendigo Foodshare’s fantastic work in reducing food poverty in the community.

“The food comes from 15 producers and retailers and is used for school breakfast programs so our kids don’t go hungry, community meals groups who supply meals for those doing it tough and emergency relief agencies to help those individuals and families experiencing extreme hardship,” Ms Sykes said.

“Bendigo Foodshare provide enough food for about 14,000 people every month. That’s over one million kilograms of food each year.

“Foodshare can only run thanks to their volunteers. So we thought we could give them some valuable support. Just $1 will provide food for 16 meals.”

BCHS staff member Angela McKinley joined the Workplace Giving Program to support people in the community benefitting from Bendigo Foodshare.

“My contribution is automatically deducted from my salary, so the process is very easy. It is tax deductible and you get a sense of community spirit and achievement when you hear of the positive effects that Bendigo Foodshare have had locally,” Angela said.

“It’s always rewarding to know you have contributed in making someone else’s life a little easier and ensuring that such as basic need such as food is being provided. For such a small donation the benefits to the community are huge.”

Another BCHS staff member Mary-Anne Richardson was also keen to help the community through the Workplace Giving Program.

“In an ideal world, everyone would look out for the people in their community and then there wouldn’t be anyone going without meals during tough times. Making a donation each pay day to Bendigo Foodshare is a small way that I can help look out for the people in our community.”

CEO SPOT: Busy end to 2016 for BCHS

Friday 23 December 2016

By Kim Sykes

CEO, BCHS

It’s been a busy end to 2016 for Bendigo Community Health Services as we prepare our organisation to deliver much-needed and sustained change in the area of disadvantage in our community.

Much of the hard work around restructuring our organisation to ensure we are best placed to tackle the cycles of disadvantage in Bendigo has been completed and we are excited about the work we will be doing in 2017.

The restructure is just one step in planning how we will deliver our programs in the future to best support our community and to ensure our organisation remains healthy in an increasingly competitive environment of service delivery and funding.

As the year draws to a close we farewell some long-serving staff who have made great contributions to our organisation.  They are moving on to new and exciting employment and we have no doubt they will bring great knowledge and experience to their new organisations. We wish them every success.

We will welcome three new directors in January who are keen to help BCHS achieve our goal of challenging disadvantage in Bendigo and leading our organisation into this new and exciting era.

It was fantastic to get the keys to our new kidzspace building in Kangaroo Flat this week. We will start moving our child and family services into the building in January to deliver a hub and service model which will be a first for regional Australia. Stay tuned for a big open day in the New Year!

Big changes and opportunities are coming and this will be exciting and very rewarding.

We thank all our consumers and loyal partners for the ongoing support through 2016 – you are vital to our success; perhaps we don’t say ‘thank you’ quite enough but we greatly value your trust in us.

Finally, on behalf of all at Bendigo Community Health Services we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.
