#standwithcommunityhealth campaign to raise awareness of value to Bendigo

Wednesday 15 August 2018
Written by Rod

Bendigo Community Health Services is supporting a Victorian Healthcare Association campaign called ‘We Stand With Community Health’ in the lead up to the Victorian election in November.

The #standwithcommunityhealth campaign was launched at Star Health in Melbourne today.

The focus will be raising awareness of the role community health services play in Victoria and getting all political parties to pledge support for a number of ‘asks’ in the lead up to the election, including:

  • New community health centres where the public need them.
  • $60 million every year to improve outdated facilities.
  • Increased funding to enable community health services to keep pace with a growing population.
  • Better leveraging community health to reduce pressure on Victoria’s public hospital emergency departments.
  • Support for community health services to provide an even stronger health safety net for vulnerable Victorians.
  • Increased public dental funding, so people can access care when they need it.

These ‘asks’ were chosen after VHA consulted with community health services to determine the biggest needs across all platforms and for this reason do not just reflect our priorities alone.

We have raised the importance of prevention and the need for a workforce strategy to attract health professionals to regional areas and these will be included in our local discussions with our sitting members and candidates.

We have written to Bendigo MPs, candidates and large organisations seeking campaign support.

Bendigo Community Health Services is saddened to hear of the passing of much-valued life member Jack Taylor OAM.

A great community-minded leader and great supporter of Bendigo Community Health Services.

A five-time mayor of the Borough of Eaglehawk, Jack played an important role in the push to establish Eaglehawk Community Health Services in October 1973 which would later become Bendigo Community Health Services.

"We had limited doctors in Eaglehawk at the time and this is just what we wanted as a community," Jack recalled during our 30th birthday celebrations.

"And, of course, the borough council were right behind anything in that regard."

Our CEO Kim Sykes remembers Jack as a person who was always working to help others.

"The last time I saw Jack he was attending a BCHS function and had to leave early because he had to get to Bunnings to help with some fundraising - always helping others," Kim said.

Our tribute to Jack in local media read:

"The Board and staff of Bendigo Community Health Services wish to pay tribute to the life of Jack Taylor. Jack was a Life Member of BCHS and the Founding Chair of the former Eaglehawk and Long Gully Community Health Service. His life has made a difference to so many others.  He was a role model who has left a legacy that will live on."

Thank you Jack for your wonderful support, service and tremendous loyalty to community health in general and our organisation.

Our thoughts are with Jack's family and friends at this time.

We value all community feedback on our services and programs.

It's this information which helps us keep improving and implement changes to ensure your experience with us is valuable.

Our staff don't seek recognition but it's nice to provide them with feedback when their service has been appreciated by one of our consumers too.

Below are some examples of things our consumers have raised and the actions we've taken in response.

If you would like to provide some feedback on our services, programs, teams or staff please click here

We'd love to hear from you!

Podiatry: Making booking appointments easier

You said: One of our community surveys revealed a desire from consumers to have the ability to book appointments well in advance rather than having to ring one or two weeks beforehand. Our consumers were finding the short notice for an appointment was often meeting high demand and they couldn't find an appropriate time.

We did: We reviewed our appointment process and now have a system in place where consumers can make advanced bookings for a podiatry appointment. This has helped ease high demand periods and made finding an appropriate time easier.

Strength training: Yes, it was hot in there

You said: We got some constructive feedback from some of the consumers attending our Active Living Program strength training sessions that the temperature in the venue was too hot to enjoy their physical activity.

We did: We reviewed literature around safe and ideal temperatures for strength training sessions and using that information created some new guidelines for all our venues which have now been put in place. Consumers are now working out in ideal conditions!

Long Gully Legends are the Bendigo Futsal Multicultural Tournament champions for 2018.

Sporting the tops of world football clubs Liverpool, LA Galaxy and Tottenham Hotspur, the Long Gully Legends overcome Karen Culture and Social Support Foundation B to win the final.

The tournmanent was another great success with teams enjoying some high quality play at the Futsal Institute Bendigo stadium in Golden Square.

Our Settlement Services team organised the annual tournament to encourage fun, participation and inclusion.

Each team featured at least four players who have lived in Australia for less than four years.

Long Gully Legends received a Bendigo Futsal Multicultural Tournament perpetual trophy.

Futsal is a modified version of traditional soccer and embraced around the world.

The popularity of the sport with Karen and Afghan communities in Bendigo motivated BCHS to kick off the annual tournament in 2014.

Settlement Services manager Martine Street said organising events such as the futsal tournament was important for the BCHS team.

"Participation in organised activities, social connection and physical activity are priority areas for the work done by our staff - it's great to see that effort rewarded with events such as this multicultural futsal tournament," she said.

Bendigo bottle shops must stay vigilant with ID and alcohol sales

Tuesday 26 June 2018

Bendigo bottle shop owners and licensees must help protect improving trends in teenage drinking by maintaining strict controls on alcohol sales without appropriate proof-of-age identification.

Bendigo Community Health Services is working with schools through a Smart Generation Program to educate students and parents on the dangers of alcohol.

BCHS Smart Generation co-ordinator Anne-Marie Kelly said studies in 2014 and 2016 had shown welcome improvement in the attitudes of young people to alcohol.

“A 2016 National Drug Strategy Household Survey found 80 per cent of 12 to 17 year olds had abstained from alcohol. This compares very favourably to an Australian government survey in 2014 that found 68 per cent of 12 to 17 year olds were obtaining alcohol from home, friends or buying themselves from a bottle shop,” Ms Kelly said.

Ms Kelly said monitoring bottle shop sales was a key component of the Smart Generation Program and with a 2018 audit planned the organisation wanted to see better results than 2017 which showed some outlets weren’t doing enough to ensure improving teenage drinking trends continued.

“We had two 18-year-olds of underage appearance visit 28 Bendigo outlets on two separate occasions to try and buy alcohol without proof-of-age identification,” she said.

“The audit found 67 per cent of outlets sold alcohol without the presentation of identification.

“We even had one bottle shop do the right thing by asking for proof-of-age ID but when it wasn’t provided, sold the alcohol anyway.”
