The wonderful Day Care Educators who open their homes to children of all ages are the heart and soul of our Family Day Care program.

Their caring nature and desire to help other families is inspiring.

We are fortunate that many of our Family Day Care Educators stay with our team for a long time.

Sue Barr is the perfect example having joined Bendigo Family Day Care in September 1983 and building a wonderful rapport with children and parents through 36 years until her retirement in 2019.

Sue was a mum of three daughters aged between four and eight.

Family Day Care senior co-ordinator Denise Flanagan said Sue had embraced many changes in home-based child care through the years.

"When Sue first started working she was earning $45 for a 40-hour week and $1.50 per hour for care over that. If the child was absent she was paid a whole $1 per day," Denise said.

"Sue was very involved in our playgroups from the very start, happily interacting with both fellow Educators and the children they cared for and formed friendships with other Educators and staff that have been valued over the years by all parties.

"Sue attended our Children’s Christmas Picnics for 39 years and always encouraged the families and children to participate in the themes of the day."

Denise said Sue would have provided care for more than 200 children through the years.

"Many of those children have happy memories of the time they spent at Sue’s and all the activities she provided for them," Denise said.

"Sue’s dealings with the parents of children in care have always been exceptional and she has always had a warm, caring approach.

"Her awareness of the needs of the children in her care was evident to staff when visiting her, earning a high regard for her child care skills within the industry."

Thanks for 36 wonderful years of service Sue.
