A future in the community health sector will be the focus of the first Bendigo Community Health Services Careers Expo on Wednesday (March 21).

BCHS CEO Kim Sykes said the Careers Expo would promote the benefits of working in community health and the opportunities offered by Bendigo Community Health Services.

“We have a well-qualified and dedicated staff who are building great careers in their chosen fields. The experience the staff have gathered in their journey is a valuable resource that can help others looking to establish their own careers,” Kim said.

“Projections for job growth in the community sector are huge and with so many great career opportunities now and on the horizon we see a responsibility to support and promote the sector and that’s what we’re doing with this Careers Expo.”

BCHS workforce development and support manager Karyn Carracher said the Careers Expo would cover general practitioners, nursing, counselling and mental health, sexual health, men’s health, women’s health, social work, podiatry, alcohol and other drugs, occupational therapy, speech pathology, project work, information and technology, finance and administration.

“Our staff will be available to talk with secondary or university students looking to choose or pursue a career and those already in the workforce considering a change or move,” Karyn said.

“It’s not every day you get the opportunity to sit down and talk directly with someone working in the career you want to pursue and we’re looking forward to seeing people make the most of this opportunity.

“We will also have information on current BCHS job opportunities and offer tips on the things you should do when applying for a position with us.

“The careers section on our www.bchs.com.au website is hugely popular and we hope that interest flows on to the Careers Expo.”

Volunteer and student placement opportunities with BCHS will be another focus of the Careers Expo along with general information on the health and wellbeing services offered by the organisation.

Headspace Bendigo will attend the expo to answer questions on career opportunities and services.

Several universities have supported the Careers Expo by providing course information.

SalaryPackagingPLUS will explain the benefits of salary sacrificing for community health staff.

The Rotary Club of Bendigo South have volunteered to cook a barbecue with meat and bread donated by Strath Village IGA. A gold coin donation for the barbecue will support the Soup Kitchen run by Bendigo Community Health Services from 4pm to 5pm each Thursday.

The Careers Expo will be held at the BCHS Central site in The Mill arcade at 165-171 Hargreaves Street from 5pm to 7pm.
