Innovative Health Services for Homeless Youth (IHSHY)
The IHSHY program at Bendigo Community Health works with young people aged 12-24 experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of becoming homeless. In real terms, this means that many young people who are feeling unsupported or isolated in their current situation are able to access the service.
Much of the work undertaken by the program involves supporting young people to access other health services, to link in with appropriate support networks, and to provide a safe place to explore their current situation and needs without judgment.
We provide youth focused health services, health assessments, health education and also advocacy for clients with other services. Ongoing support by the IHSHY program will also be provided as appropriate.
The key for IHSHY is ensuring that the approach to health care support for young people is innovative and able to meet their needs based on their current situation.
Young people can access appointments on Mondays and Wednesdays by calling BCHS. Many of these appointment slots will be up to 60 minutes in length, to allow time for an adequate assessment for the young person.
Any external agency referring a young person is encouraged to contact the IHSHY worker directly, to ensure appropriate referral.
