Community Education

Programs within the community education stream have a public health and health promotion focus.  They are designed to work with our community in a range of settings including schools, workplaces, through the media and community events.  BCHS supports national drug and related harm awareness campaigns such as Drug Action Week, Hep C week and World Aids Day.  These awareness raising events provide a platform for 
community engagement and education activities.

Community organisation or schools may apply for BCHS to provide community education services on a fee for service basis. To register your interest please download the application form below.

Programs offered through this stream include:

Needle Syringe Program 
BCHS offers a Needle Syringe Program (NSP) at three fixed sites across Bendigo and an after hours outreach mobile service.  Our NSP is a harm reduction strategy funded by the Department of Health, offering free injecting equipment, health information, education, support and referral to other health services. Tourniquets, sterile water and wheel filters are available at the fixed sites for cost price.

 The NSP is an anonymous completely confidential service.

Cautious With Cannabis
A two hour education/discussion group for people who use or are affected by cannabis use.  The group explores issues such as social, legal and physical implications of cannabis use. Parents or support people are welcome to attend.  This group is held on the second Wednesday of each month. 
 
Alcohol Alert
A two hour educational program for those who may be experiencing concerns related to binge drinking of alcohol. This group includes discussion and education on standard drinks, risks and benefits of alcohol. Harm reduction strategies are discussed to aid the participants in reducing the risk associated with binge drinking. 

Referrals to Cautious with Cannabis and Alcohol Alert
Referrals to Cautious with Cannabis and Alcohol Alert are through the Magistrates court, other service providers or client self referral.  Participants of the Cautious with Cannabis and Alcohol Alert programs are provided with a certificate on completion of the groups.

Mobile Drug Safety 
This program provides support, education and information to people with drug issues. The program focus ranges from safe injecting and disposal of injecting equipment to safety issues to prevent harmful use of alcohol and 
other drugs.  This information is also available to the broader Bendigo community via information sessions and drug safety campaigns.
