Podiatry

“Our feet are often the most neglected and forgotten part of our bodies. Yet, our feet are our main mode of transport, carrying us on a journey of an average of 128,000kms in a lifetime – the equivalent of three times round the world."

Podiatrists are university-educated foot health professionals. They diagnose and treat specific foot and lower limb conditions including foot problems associated with diabetes and arthritis.  Podiatrists are qualified to identify and treat the cause of foot pain which can occur due to problems with biomechanics (structure of the foot), inappropriate footwear, growths (corns and calluses etc), disease (diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis), infection or injury.

It is recommended that you visit a podiatrist if:
·   You have pain in your feet
·    You have skin or nail problems (ingrown toenails, corns, skin rashes)
·    You have foot odour
·    You have a foot injury
·    You have health problems such as diabetes or arthritis
·    You have recurrent trips and falls
·    You have problems getting shoes to fit comfortably
·    You have lumps of bumps, bunions or misshapen toes

Diabetes and podiatry
People with diabetes are potentially at greater risk of developing serious foot problems – This is because people with diabetes are more likely to experience reduced blood circulation and nerve degeneration in their feet and legs, causing a decreased ability to fight infection.  All these factors contribute to a reduced ability to heal – even minor cuts and abrasions.

Anyone who has diabetes is strongly advised to have their feet checked by a podiatrist for assessment of circulation, nerve function, other potential risks and advice on preventative foot care. This should be done on a regular basis as recommended by a podiatrist.

The BCHS podiatry service is primarily Home and Community Care funded which is for frail aged and clients with a disability.  It is accessible for clients with health care cards or pensions (not DVA gold card holders as they are covered for private podiatry).  Our service has a waiting list at times for new patients and people are then seen according to urgency, medical need and health conditions.

BCHS podiatry provides comprehensive diabetes foot health assessments and treatment and referral for other services as required.
The BCHS podiatry service also provides a home visit service which is for clients who are house bound and unable to attend our clinics due to mobility issues.  A referral is required for home visit services with a medical summary.

There is a minimal cost for BCHS podiatry services although there may be additional fees for the cost of any orthotic devices (innersoles etc) that may be required.
